Drone is definitely a Gutenberg press style technology. It impacts just about everything from videography and content creation to security.
2018 holiday season saw incredible disruptions to flight schedule when Gatwick Airport in London, UK was forced to close its runway, grounding hundreds of flights, after a drone was repeatedly spotted flying over the airfield.
The majority of unmanned aerial vehicles are actually small, remote-controlled quadcopters used by hobbyists and photographers.
These small devices are now a mainstream gadget, which can cost from under $50 to several thousands. But the losses this device has caused at Gatwick runs into millions.
Due to the pace of advancements and frequency of disruptive technologies it has hard for the society to cope. And we end up often times with more regulations and laws.
This is not to say that we do not need regulatory frameworks for technologies. We most certainly do. Good regulations and frameworks provide a safe environment for technology to flourish and advance.
The issue is when lawmakers who lack technical understanding try to implement solutions that make the situation worse.
For instance, in this case, the knee jerk reaction could be to ban all drones or bring in regulations that restrict their ability. An alternative can be to invent technology that help mitigate such risks around the airport.
