Windows 10 May 2020 update security features

The long awaited Windows 10 May 2020 update is out and has a series of security features as part of the roll out. Microsoft has more than enough times botched up major updates, breaking a lot more than they actually fix. However this time around, it seems that the Windows 10 May 2020 update is performing as anticipated without any major bugs or issues being reported as of now.

The Windows 10 May 2020 update, also known as Windows 10 2004, has started rolling out to users this week (25th May 2020).

Microsoft has stated that this new Windows 10 May 2020 update version comes with many new features and major updates, including the likes of a revamped Network Status page, the addition of GPU card temperatures to the Task Manager, containers on windows, a new Cortana experience and many other improvements and additions.

However, the Windows 10 May 2020 update version also comes with improvements on the security front, which Microsoft claims will help keep Windows 10 users safe going forward.

Since I have not tested all of these security features we will take Microsoft’s word that they all function as intended.

    1. Windows Hello – Fast Identity Online 2 (FIDO2) authenticator across all major browsers including Chrome and Firefox
    2. Windows Sandbox improvements
    3. Windows Defender System Guard – higher level of System Management Mode (SMM) Firmware Protection
    4. Windows Defender Application Guard for Chromium-based Edge and coming soon Application Guard for Office is coming soon
    5. Windows PowerShell cmdlets have been improved
    6. and always additional improvements and bug fixes

Now, I know that this not a a very aggressive or major update of the security architecture. However, given the fact that Windows 10 has now officially crossed more than 100 vulnerabilities, fixing some of them and reducing the number of open or know vulnerabilities is a major welcome.

Most of the security breaches are a result of oversight, callousness or exploits of known vulnerabilities resulting in major financial and reputation losses for the organizations.

In my opinion one of the reasons why IT Security is facing this challenge, is primarily due to lack seriousness in organization’s day-to-day body language. We say we are serious but we don’t act it.

What new vulnerabilities will this new Windows 10 May 2020 update bring about still remains to be known. But for now its a long awaited and welcomed effort.
