This is an interesting news video that I came across at Voice of America. I am sure everyone remembers the recent incident of a mega ship getting stuck in the Suiz Canal. In a day and age of immersive computer simulations, here is a news story about practical experience for How Not to Get Stuck in the Suez Canal at scale model.
In March, one of the world’s biggest container ships became stuck in Egypt’s Suez Canal, creating a commercial logjam and spikes in the cost of oil. At a training facility in France, mariners are learning how to avoid a similar predicament.
Creating a new technology or gadget is one challenge, and making it accessible through mass production for mass market adoption is another feat in itself. While not true for all innovation, however unfortunately, most new and exciting technologies that we see or hear about in the news fails to reach a value proposition for mass adoption.
This is a good example, where lack of technology creates a limitation. Exciting and practical no doubt, but how accessible can it be to everyone around the world given the geographic location of the school. 60% of world’s trade passes through the canal and you can possibly imagine all captains to get training at this location. Realistic simulations, that through challenges and bad weather anomalies would be a better training program for How Not to Get Stuck in the Suez Canal.
I try to blog about science and technology related news on my website, one for referencing back when you are writing something or researching, and two to share with everyone.
