It is with a heavy heart that I write this post in memory of Dr. Li Chao, a highly respected professor in the field of computer science and mathematics. Dr. Chao was not only an accomplished researcher and author, but he was also a kind and caring human being who went out of his way to help his students succeed.
I first met Dr. Chao in 2001, and I was immediately struck by his friendly and engaging personality. He was always there to help his students, and his extensive knowledge of computer technology was a valuable resource for all who had the pleasure of learning from him.
Dr. Chao’s professional achievements were numerous and highly regarded, with three published books to his name and cutting-edge research in the field of cloud education environments. But perhaps his greatest achievement was his dedication to his students and his ability to make even the most challenging material understandable.
An education and Student Advocate
One of my fondest memories of Dr. Chao was when I tried to gift him a Cross pen after my graduation, but he refused to accept it. He admired it and thanked me for the gift, but then handed me the pen set back, saying it was his graduation gift to me. He was always telling funny stories about students not studying and worrying about the exam the day before, and it was clear that he had a genuine love and concern for all of his students.
Even after my graduation, I stayed in touch with Dr. Chao, sending him messages and greetings every couple of years. I am sure he may have forgotten who I was, but he always replied with kindness and encouragement.
One day, in reply to a similar email, Dr. Chao convinced me to pursue a master’s degree, I agreed on one condition, only if I could do the degree by taking all of his courses only. While that was not possible, ironically, scheduling conflicts meant that I didn’t get to take a single one of his courses, but his words of encouragement and support meant everything to me.
Dr. Chao’s impact went far beyond his academic and professional accomplishments. He had an uncanny ability to connect with his students on a personal level, making them feel seen, heard, and valued. He was always available to answer questions and provide guidance, and his office hours were always full of students seeking his advice and expertise.
A teacher and an Author
He was a prolific author and researcher, with a focus on computer science and online education. He published three books during his career, each one a testament to his expertise and passion for the field.
His first book, “Database Development and Management,” was published in November 2005 and was a groundbreaking work in the field of database management. Dr. Chao’s in-depth knowledge of the subject was evident in the book, which quickly became a go-to resource for students and professionals in the field.
His second book, “Strategies and Technologies for Developing Online Computer Labs for Technology-Based Courses,” was published in 2008 and addressed the challenges of teaching technology-based classes online. Dr. Chao’s research and expertise provided a comprehensive guide for researchers and educators, and the book quickly became a valuable resource for universities and colleges around the country.
Dr. Chao’s third book, “Utilizing Open Source Tools for Online Teaching and Learning: Applying Linux Technologies,” was published in 2009 and focused on the use of open-source products for online teaching and learning systems. His research and expertise in this area opened up new possibilities for educators and paved the way for innovative approaches to online learning.
Legacy that impacted student’s lives
Through his books, Dr. Chao’s contributions to the field of computer science and online education were immense. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide future generations of students and researchers, and we are forever grateful for the knowledge and insights that he shared with us.
Dr. Chao was a true gem in the world of academia, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of students and researchers to pursue their passions and make a difference in the world. Rest in peace, Dr. Chao.
